GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 6th June, 1923.

My Lord Duke,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of Your Grace's despatch No.59 of the 17th of March and to

enclose a copy of a report be the Chief Assistant to

Secretary for Chinese Affairs with regard to the transaction to which Viscountess Astor's question refers.

2.

The original presentation took place in the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs in July, 1919, where the parties resorted in order that the bona fides of both sides might be established and for the prevention of any suspicion of kidnapping or other evil purpose.

3.

It will be observed that the difficulty experienced by the mother in getting back her daughter was due not to any question of money but to the reluctance of the girl to leave a home where she was happy and well treat- ed.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord Duke,

Your Grace's most obedient

humble servant,

7.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE, K.G.,
